What is Svaroopa® Yoga?

Svaroopa® yoga is easy, enjoyable and suitable for most ages and levels of fitness. You do not have to be young, fit or flexible; Svaroopa® Yoga will meet your body where it is at and support you in optimising your health and wellbeing. You do not have to know how to relax, Svaroopa® Yoga will reduce stress levels; teach you deep relaxation and peace of mind. Classes include guided awareness (relaxation), breathing and yoga poses. Svaroopa® yogis are encouraged and guided in developing their own home practices.

I had spent the whole of my inner life looking for the release and joy that these exercises give. John C. Manly

Svaroopa® yoga offers a significantly different paradigm to other yoga styles and is different to exercise. Rather than pushing or forcing the body, Svaroopa® yoga opens the body gently and deeply in a supportive and nurturing way.

Svaroopa® yoga specialises in releasing the layers of tension in your body by beginning at your tailbone and progressing upwards through each area of your spine. Precise alignment, the use of propping for support and gentle hands-on adjustment facilitate this physical opening. With this deep release, or Core Opening, comes a wide variety of physical benefits including relief from chronic or acute pain, stress reduction and management, increased flexibility and freedom of movement. Core Opening promotes a process of healing and transformation on all levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Svaroopa® yoga practice is both physical and more than physical. The unravelling of the deepest tensions of your body and mind creates healing and personal transformation, opening you to an illuminative experience of your own divine nature – the goal of all yoga.

Svaroopa is a Sanskrit word that means you know yourself at the deepest level of your being. When you find this on the inside it manifests on the outside too and you move into life in a whole new way.

“Svaroopa is the experience of the Bliss of your own Being. It pervades all of existence and beyond. It is there in every beam of light, in every breath you breathe and in every moment. Even now” – Swami Nirmalananda Saraswati.

“Svaroopa® yoga has taught me a new way to live. It has allowed me to open my mind and think about who and what I am. This opening has consequently transcended into my relationships with family, friends and how I view the world in general.” Anastasia S

About Janaki

I attended my first yoga class about 30 years ago. I was quite amazed how one and a half hours per week in a class could make such an improvement in my sense of wellbeing. However, I was busy pursuing a career in Hotel Management and then nurturing a family and it was many years before that pleasure turned into a passion. I qualified in my first Yoga Teacher Training Course in 1996. I taught Yoga Chi Gung for four years in the Wynnum area, many of my classes being held in a room under my house!

Despite the many benefits, I felt there were elements missing from my practice. In 2001 I discovered Svaroopa® Yoga and completed the introductory teachers’ course, ‘Foundations’. After practicing the style for only three months I knew I had found what I was really looking for.Svaroopa® Yoga is about much more than just the body; it is a way of living – Conscious Living.

After several visits to Master Yoga Foundation in the USA, I completed my certification as a Svaroopa® Yoga Teacher in 2006. Since then our Svaroopa® community in the Bayside area of Brisbane has grown exponentially. In 2008 Svaroopa® Yoga Teacher Training was offered in Australia for the first time and a number of my students have since become teachers themselves. We now have a very active, enthusiastic and committed group of Svaroopa® Yoga Teachers throughout Brisbane. This has allowed me the freedom to undertake further Svaroopa® Trainings and after many more trips to the USA I am now qualified and experienced to teach in a number of additional areas:

  • Specialist classes, for example, Deeper classes for more experienced Svaroopa® Yoga students, Pregnancy Yoga, Gentle Yoga and classes for people with back problems
  • Weekend Retreats and Half Day Workshops
  • Yoga philosophy
  • Teaching meditation
  • Self Inquiry (Vichara)
  • Embodyment® Yoga Therapy
  • Svaroopa® Yoga Therapy
  • Training others to become yoga teachers in the Svaroopa® style
  • And more

I know by my own experience Svaroopa® Yoga gives me everything I ever yearned for and much more besides. I am learning to live life from the inside out. Through my continued learning and the depth and breadth of my knowledge and experience I am now able to teach, serve and support other teachers and dedicated students in their spiritual journey through this wonderfully nurturing and compassionate medium - Svaroopa® Yoga.
